Ytra Lón Farm Hostel based in Iceland has set up a new venture named Farm Hostel Ytra Lón ‘Outer Space Art Place’. An art residency programme which enables national and international artists, writers and scholars, working in all art forms and fields of studies, to undertake research and develop new projects using Langanes as an inspiration. Invited artists are given the time, space and freedom to concentrate on the development of their work. Ytra Lón is situated in the northeastern corner of Iceland on the midst of Langanes peninsula. Virtually void of inhabitants, except for a large bird population in spring and summer. A very isolated place, few steps away from the Arctic Circle the peninsula is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The almost complete absence of urban light pollution offers an unparalleled opportunity to observe the moon and the star filled heavens and the spectacle of the aurora borealis, the northern lights. The stay at Ytra Lón is an experience in itself, as the proprietors also run a sheep farm on location. You can observe the day-to-day life of Icelandic sheepherders while staying. Farm Hostel Ytra Lón is situated 14 km north of Þórshöfn, a fishing village with a population of 400. All major services are provided in Þórshöfn, such as a restaurant, supermarket, a bank, post office, library, gas station, health care center, pharmacy and a wonderful swimming pool. Residencies at Ytra Lón The residency provides up to five studio apartments, located in Heimatún, 30 square meters each with bathroom and kitchenette, fully equipped with cooking facilities, microwave, toaster etc. Duvets, linen and towels are included. There is some space in Heimatún where exhibitions can be held.The studio Smalaskáli is a 1 minute walk from the apartments, divided into three workspaces with shared kitchen and bathroom. A barn for rough work can be found on the farmyard. Applications must be sent via regular mail, we do not accept applications by e-mail. Required documents Artists statement/Project description, see application form, please try to use text sparingly and to the point. Artists CV, please do not send a CV exceeding 2 pages. A few examples of works (3 – 5), either as prints or on 1 Cd. Please do not send Cd’s containing more than 5 documents. The files should be .jpg for image, .mov for video or text samples for writers. Residency fee Month 550 € for an apartment for one artist. Month 200 € for a studio space for one artist. Confirmation fee, worth one month, is due at booking. Guest fee Artists are allowed to have guest come and stay with them for a few days for a minimal fee of 20 €/night. The residency coordinator should be informed of all guests before arrival. All guests are provided with bedding and a towel. The residency fee must be paid upon acceptance or no later than 3 months prior to arrival. The residency will not hold your reservation until you have paid for your stay. For residencies lasting longer than one month the second and third month should be paid at least 2 months prior to arrival. Furthermore, an amount of 200 € must be paid upon arrival and will be returned when the occupier vacates the premises, provided that they are left in the same condition as when the occupier arrived. Final cleaning is available for 25 €. The residency fee is intended to cover the general cost of running the program. It does not constitute rent and the artist therefore does not obtain the legal status of tenant. Cancellations The following conditions apply to cancellation: More than 2 months in advance of arrival: 50% will be refunded. Within 2 months of arrival: No refund.
